How to Backup Data When Windows Won’t Boot

As we know windows is the most dominant operating system in the world. Almost all computer users used windows at least one time. People love to use windows OS due to its user friendly interface and features.  There is no doubt about it that windows OS is a great operating system but it does has its fair share of problem. If you have been used windows for a long time then you may be familiar with a problem where windows refuse to boot due to some problem and you are not able to use your PC.
If you are having this problem then you can fix it by running start-up repair but if you are not able to fix this issue then only one option left to you that you’ve to perform a clean installation of windows. So if you are going to install windows then you you’ve to format your HDD and if you format your HDD then definitely you will lose your all data saved in desktop, my document, pictures, videos and music which you did not backup.

In such a situation you’ve you to backup your all data from your HDD to an external drive or another drive of your PC. But may be a question in come into your mind that how to backup data when windows won’t boot? The answer is by using Linux Live CD or USB drive you can backup your all data when windows won’t boot and today you’ll learn how to backup data by using Linux distro when windows won’t boot.

Requirements

The requirements of this process are…
  • Linux Distro ISO image such as Ubuntu or Linux Mint. But here we’ll show you the process with ubuntu. So download it from below link
  • One USB flash drive/Pen drive.
  • You need to download Rufus tool to create a bootable USB drive. You can download it from below link.

Steps to Create Bootable Linux USB Drive

We already discuss how to use Rufus to create a bootable usb drive for windows installation and in same way you can create bootable Linux USB drive. Don’t worry; here we will discuss it again….
  • First of all download Ubuntu ISO file and Rufus tool from the above link.
  • Insert USB drive into USB port of the pc and Run Rufus tool.
  • Now select settings like below image

  • Now Click on Drive icon and select the ubuntu iso image and finally click on start.
Wait few minutes and once the process complete close Rufus and eject the usb drive and follow the below steps…

Steps to Recover Data on Windows with Bootable Linux USB Drive

After creating bootable usb you’ve to connect that usb with your pc which won’t boot. So connect the usb drive and restart your pc.
  • Now go to boot menu by pressing appropriate key (in my case it’s F12) and select USB drive and then press Enter.

  • Now ubuntu welcome screen will be appearing and you’ll see two options Try Ubuntu and Install Ubuntu. Here you’ve to click on Try Ubuntu.

  • Once you click on Try Ubuntu you’ll logged into the ubuntu desktop and from left menu panel click on the explorer icon to access drives of your Hard Disk.

  • Now transfer all important data to another drive or insert an external drive and copy your data to it.
Once you backup your all data, you can format your HDD to perform a clean installation of windows.

Conclusion

These were the process to backup data when windows won’t boot. It’s always recommended to create a bootable Linux DVD rather than bootable usb because you don’t know when your pc will be stuck and won’t boot. So before happening anything creates a bootable Linux disk and if you have a bootable Linux distro disk then you don’t need to worry about losing your data if your windows refuse to boot.
